Sensitization & Awareness

Fighting Stigma Through Education

Epilepsy in general is plagued by stigma and misinformation. Harmful myths, fear, and ignorance cause many Persons With Epilepsy (PWE) to live in isolation and shame for no reason. This is worse in Uganda where most PWEs live in rural communities where superstition and ignorance abound. Seizure Support challenges those beliefs—replacing myths with facts, fear with compassion, and rejection with dignity.

Why Awareness Matters

    • Stigma isolates: many PWEs are excluded from school, work, and social life.

    • Dangerous misinformation: fake “cures” and superstition delay proper treatment and increase risk.

    • Emergency response gaps: communities often panic or act unsafely during seizures due to lack of training.

    • Knowledge transforms: understanding epilepsy as a medical condition shifts attitudes from fear to support.

How We Create Change

    • Community outreach: culturally sensitive sessions in villages and towns.

    • Schools & workshops: programs that equip students and teachers to support peers.

    • Caregiver training: practical, safe seizure-response skills that save lives.

    • Media campaigns: radio, social media, and printed materials in local languages.

    • Partnerships: engaging religious, local, and health leaders to accelerate acceptance.
